The Pinnawala elephant orphanage is the perfect place to meet some of Sri Lanka’s most infamous residents. In the ma oya river, you can see these massive creatures up close as they drink and play in the glistening water.
Then we went on to Sigiriya itself. There is a cultural trinity located within the country. Explore the Dambulla Cave Temple in the late afternoon.
The Dambulla Cave Temple is the most revered of Asia’s cave temples, with a history dating back to the 1st century BC. The temple is surrounded by five caves cut into the side of a huge rock. A drip line has been chiselled into the Rock’s underside to prevent water damage.
The ceilings of these caves are covered with elaborate patterns of religious images that have been painstakingly painted to follow the rock’s organic curves. You can find statues of deities, bodhisattvas, and the Buddha within.
The cave monastery was built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC and is the best-preserved ancient building in Sri Lanka. Even now, thousands of worshippers and curious onlookers flock to this Shrine.

Sigiriya is a colossal ancient rock fortress and site that was constructed by King Kashyapa in the years 473–495. The lion’s rock is what the locals call Sigiriya, also spelt Sinhagiri. To get to the top of Sigiriya, where the Lion’s Rock Fortress is located, you must ascend 1200 steps. About 200 metres is the height of Sigiriya.
In the afternoon, visit Minneriya or the nearby Kaudulla National Park for a thrilling jeep safari. About 250 elephants, buffaloes, sambar deer, crocodiles, sloth bears, and other animals call this vast century home.

We recommend visiting the Matale Spice Garden on the way to get an education on some of the best spices in all of Ceylon.
You will reach Kandy, the hill capital, today. Sri Lanka was the capital of the last Sinhalese kingdom and a major Buddhist centre.
Attend a fire walk show and a dance performance featuring traditional dances from various regions of Sri Lanka to really get the blood pumping.

Visit the hill capital of Kandy, an important Buddhist site and the seat of the last independent Sinhalese kingdom. Kandy is a cultural and commercial hub, as well as a popular pilgrimage destination, located in a picturesque valley encircled by towering mountains. Then explore the botanical garden, home to over 4,000 plant species.

The journey to Nuwara Eliya offers stunning waterfalls and vistas. Plantations in Sri Lanka. Travel to a Ceylon tea plantation and factory to learn about the production process.

Horton plains national park, train ride
Located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Horton Plains National Park is a preserve made up of montane grassland and cloud forest.
Located between 6,900 and 7,500 feet in elevation, this plateau is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life, many of which are unique to this area. In 1988, this area was established as a national park by the government of Sri Lanka. World’s End and Bakers Falls are two of the most visited sites in Horton Plains.
The three-hour train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is a scenic one, passing through jungle and mountain scenery en route to its destination. As you travel further, you’ll reach the verdant highlands, where large tea plantations and picturesque hilltop settlements and waterfalls await.

Mini Adam’s peak, Nine arches bridge, Ravana falls, Ella rock
Explore the nearby mini-Peak Adam’s or Ella rock this morning. The walk itself is worthwhile because it takes place in a beautiful, verdant tea plantation.
It’s well worth the effort because you get a great overview of the area around Ella, and the view from the top is breathtaking.

The Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka is well-known for its elephant population and as a haven for avian wildlife.
