Start off your exploration of Sri Lanka by making a trip to the Pinnawala elephant orphanage, where some of the country’s most infamous residents were once cared for. Spectators can get up close and personal with these massive creatures as they feed and swim in the Ma Oya river.

If you want to learn more about what makes Ceylon’s finest spice, you should visit the spice garden. Kandy, the hill capital, will welcome you today. Sri Lanka was the capital of the last Sinhalese kingdom and a major Buddhist centre.

Spend the day in Kandy, the spiritual and political heart of Buddhism and the last independent Sinhalese state. Kandy is a cultural and commercial hub, as well as a popular pilgrimage destination, located in a picturesque valley encircled by towering mountains.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and other shrines and temples dating back to the 14th century can be found in this city, which is located 500 metres (1640 feet) above sea level.
The Sinhala kings who had successfully repelled the Portuguese and Dutch made Kandy their capital in 1592. Up until 1815, they successfully resisted British forces. Several monuments, including the Dalada Maligawa (the “Palace of the Sacred Tooth Relic”), a symbol of national sovereignty, are located in this proud city.

You can see over 4,000 plant species in this beautiful garden.

Some beautiful waterfalls and scenic overlooks can be found along the route to Nuwara Eliya. Tea plantations in Sri Lanka. Travel to a tea plantation and factory to learn about the production of Ceylon tea.

In the afternoon, you have some free time to go out and see the sights.

Day 5

 Horton plains national park, train ride

Montane grassland and cloud forest make up the majority of Horton Plains National Park in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Many species found on this plateau, which sits at an elevation of between 2,100 and 2,300 metres (6,900 and 7,500 feet), are unique to this area. In 1988, the government of Sri Lanka designated this area as a national park. World’s End and Bakers Falls are two of the most visited sites in Horton Plains.

The three-hour train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is a scenic one, passing through jungle and mountain scenery en-route to its destination. The trip takes you higher and higher into the verdant highlands, where large tea plantations and picturesque hilltop villages and waterfalls await.

Mini Adam’s peak, Nine arches bridge, Ravana falls, Ella rock

Hike up Ella Rock or Little Adam’s Peak this morning. The walk itself is worthwhile because it takes place in a beautiful, verdant tea plantation. It’s well worth the effort because you get a great panorama of the region around Ella, and the view from the top is breathtaking.

Day 7

Ella > Airport

Safari in Udawalawe National Park

You can take a jeep safari through Udawalawe National Park if you have spare time. Because even the best things eventually end. Your private guide will return you to the  airport.
