Once a hub for merchants travelling from all over the world, modern-day Colombo is a bustling destination for tourists and travellers passing through Sri Lanka on their way to other parts of Asia. Colombo’s classical grace and beauty helped it weather the storm of European conquest.
As a result, by 1907 it had become the world’s seventh-largest protected port.
