Tour Summary
Kandy is a city of graceful allure, exuding an air of antiquity that can only be experienced on a holiday to Sri Lanka. Your Sri Lankan travel agent will gladly accommodate your request to spend at least two full days in the city of the last Sinhala Kings of the island.
Located 500 metres (1640 feet) above sea level in a protected valley in the central hills of Sri Lanka, the city is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic as well as a wide variety of shrines and temples dating back to the 14th century. When the Portuguese and Dutch were driven back, the Sinhala kings made Kandy their capital.
Up until 1815, they successfully resisted British forces. Several monuments, including the Dalada Maligawa, the “Palace of the Sacred Tooth Relic,” the symbol of national sovereignty, and a must-see on any trip to Sri Lanka, can be found in this proud city. The wooden columns of the Magul Maduwa – The Audience Hall are the pinnacle of Kandyan design.
The Sinhala chieftains signed over power to the British in this area in 1815. The City was planned around the Temple Palace housing the Sacred Tooth Relic. The God Vishnu, the God Skanda, the God Natha, and the Goddess Paththini are honoured by four shrines, the devices that encircle the Temple Palace. The Buddhist Island’s guardian deity is Vishnu; the god of war is Skandha; and the goddess of chastity and health is Paththini.
